What you are buying is not just a vehicle for the afternoon but an arrangement: who drives, who rides, when you change over, and what happens if there are three or five of you. Careless sellers ignore all of this. They sell seats, take a deposit, and leave the arrangement to be argued out in a car park on the morning of the tour.
That is the buggy-specific failure. Two people who each assumed they would drive. A group of three told at the last minute that someone must pair up with strangers. A parent who expected a child to sit beside them, facing a seller who never asked the child's age. None of these problems exist on a quad page, which is why I keep this advice separate from my quad booking guide.
The two-seat question: what to agree before you pay
Before you book with anyone - me included - get clear answers on four points:
- Who is the named driver? The seller should ask this at booking, not shrug and say it gets sorted at the track.
- What is the swap policy? A fair answer is that drivers change over at the stops along the route, under staff supervision, never mid-track at speed. "You can swap whenever you like" is a warning sign, not a perk.
- What happens with odd numbers? Three people means one buggy carries two and someone drives alone, or you are paired with strangers. You want to know which before the day, not during it.
- Can a child ride as a passenger? Tell the seller the child's age when you reserve and get a direct yes or no, not a vague "no problem".
On our tours the seat plan is settled at the briefing before anyone starts an engine, and driver changes happen at the supervised stops. If a seller cannot describe their own version of that sentence, they are reselling someone else's tour and do not know the answer.

None of these channels is automatically dishonest. But with a two-seat vehicle, the distance between the person selling and the person running the track is where problems breed.
What a proper buggy base looks like
Ask any seller one plain question: where is the base, and what happens there before the convoy leaves? A serious operation has a real answer. Ours runs like this: you arrive by the included transfer, get a safety briefing covering the machine, the signals and the rules of the convoy, and then do a supervised test drive so staff can see that every driver is comfortable with the controls before the tour proper begins. Nobody is waved onto a forest track on the assumption that a buggy drives itself.
The base also tells you how honest the operator is about mud. Buggy tours here are mud tours - the route runs through forest tracks and wet sections, and finishing clean is close to impossible. That is why our price includes changing cabins and showers at the base. An operator with nowhere to wash and change is telling you either that their track is tame or that they expect you to ride back to your hotel filthy. Mud, dust and track type: questions only buggy riders need to ask
Quad riders sit exposed; buggy passengers sit low, side by side, directly in the spray line of the vehicle in front. So ask what surface the route covers. Forest track, gravel and mud each feel different in a buggy, and in dry weeks the convoy raises serious dust. This is why goggles and bandanas are sold at the base rather than bundled into the ticket - some guests bring their own, some ride without on a wet day. On our tour they are optional extras, along with photos and food, which is exactly how it should appear on your confirmation: listed as excluded, not silently missing.
Practical advice from someone who hoses the machines down afterwards: wear clothes you are willing to ruin, leave anything valuable at the hotel, and treat closed shoes as non-negotiable.
Insurance, cancellation and weather: ask before money changes hands
Three questions expose a weak seller faster than any review page:
- Is the tour insured, and is my driver covered? You want a direct answer naming the operator, not "everything is included".
- What is the cancellation policy? If you paid a street stand a cash deposit, the honest answer is often that the deposit is gone. Because we take no prepayment, cancelling costs you nothing and there is no refund to chase.
- What happens in bad weather? Rain rarely stops a buggy tour - it makes the mud better - but heavy storms can. Ask who decides, and how you will be told. We confirm details by message the day before.
