It is a fair thing to ask, because plenty of cheap listings quote a low headline price and quietly leave the tickets out.

So let me be plain. On our tour, both entrances - the white travertine terraces and the Roman spa city of Hierapolis on the plateau above them - are inside the EUR 68 you pay as an adult and the EUR 38 for a child. Your guide handles the tickets at the site. You walk through the gate without opening your wallet.

What the EUR 68 covers, item by item

This is the full inclusion list for this tour, exactly as we sell it. Nothing below is an upgrade or a supplement; every item is in the price for every guest.

• Hotel pick-up and drop-off. We collect you from your hotel in the Side resort area - Side centre, Kumkoy, Colakli, Evrenseki, Titreyengol, Gundogdu and Manavgat - and bring you back in the evening. The exact time is confirmed the day before and varies from hotel to hotel, so nobody stands in a lobby guessing. Hotel pick-up costs you nothing extra; it is simply part of the tour.
• Air-conditioned coach. Pamukkale is a long ride from the coast, and a proper coach with working air conditioning matters far more on this route than on any short local trip.
• Entrance fee to the Pamukkale travertines. The white terraces themselves. This is the ticket that cut-price tours most often leave out, and it is fully covered here.
• Entrance fee to Hierapolis. The ancient city - theatre, necropolis, colonnaded street - shares the plateau with the terraces, and its entrance is also in our price.
• Guided tour. A guide travels with the group, walks the site with you, explains what you are looking at and keeps the timings honest, so you are not hurried off the terraces early.
• Lunch. A sit-down lunch is included on the day. What you drink with it is not - more on that below.

What you pay for yourself

An honest inclusion list needs an honest exclusion list next to it. Four things on this day are yours to cover, and only one of them involves a real decision:

• Cleopatra's Pool. The warm mineral pool inside the site, with its submerged ancient columns, is optional. If you want to swim, you pay the pool entrance on site; if you would rather spend that time on the terraces, you skip it and pay nothing. We keep it out of the tour price deliberately, so guests who do not swim are not paying for guests who do. Bring swimwear and a towel in case, and decide on the day.
• Beverages. Drinks with lunch and anything you buy at the stops are your own.
• Tips. Never required, always appreciated, entirely at your discretion.
• Personal expenses. Souvenirs, snacks, photographs - the usual.

How the 10-hour day works - and why the drive is long

Pamukkale does not sit on the coast. The terraces are inland, near Denizli, on the far side of the Taurus mountains, and there is no shortcut from Side. The coach climbs out of the coastal plain, crosses the mountains and the high country behind them, and reaches the site in roughly 3 hours, with a break on the way. The return leg is the same in reverse. That is simply the geography, and any tour promising a dramatically shorter drive is being creative with the truth.

The day itself runs to around 10 hours door to door. Pick-up is early in the morning - the exact time is confirmed the day before and varies from hotel to hotel - and the early start is what buys you the middle of the day at the site itself. There you walk Hierapolis and the terraces with the guide, then have free time for photographs, a barefoot paddle in the shallow terrace pools, or the optional swim in Cleopatra's Pool. Lunch is taken during the day and is included. You are back at your hotel in the evening.

Two practical notes: shoes come off on the travertine path - a site rule that protects the calcium surface - and the white terraces reflect a great deal of sun, so pack sunglasses, sun cream and a hat even outside high summer.

Pamukkale alone, or with Salda Lake?

We run two versions of this trip, and the comparison is simple. The classic day tour is EUR 68 per adult and EUR 38 per child, at around 10 hours. The Pamukkale and Salda Lake tour adds the white-shored mountain lake often nicknamed the Turkish Maldives, costs EUR 70 per adult and EUR 40 per child, and stretches the day to around 12 hours; its own inclusion list is on that page.

For two euros more per adult it looks like an obvious upgrade, and for many guests it is - the white shore against turquoise water photographs like nowhere else in the country. But be honest with yourself about the extra two hours on the road. Families with young children, and anyone who dislikes long coach days, usually enjoy the shorter classic tour more; first-time visitors who may never pass this way again tend to take the combination. Either way, you pay on the day of the tour, not at the time of booking.
