Overview

A full day of red-dirt tracks, shallow river crossings and a riverbank water-pistol fight in the Taurus foothills above Belek. Open-top 4x4 jeeps with professional drivers, a mountain village stop with village tea (gözleme can be bought there), lunch at a riverside restaurant, and pickup from hotels across the Belek resort belt. Approximately seven hours, no prepayment, free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure.

The jeeps come to your hotel gate in Belek mid-morning. Within a few turns the golf courses and palm avenues are behind you and the road is climbing into the Taurus foothills, past citrus groves, plastic-roofed greenhouses and streams that cut under the road. The air changes first; the road surface changes next. Where the asphalt ends, the red dirt begins, and that is where the safari day really starts.

You ride in an open-top 4x4 that seats eight to ten guests, with a professional driver at the wheel. Nobody in the group drives; your job is to hold the roll bar, watch the track and get dusty. The convoy works its way along the mountain tracks, tilting through ruts and dropping into shallow river crossings that throw cool water over the sides. At the riverbank the drivers stop for the part of the day everyone has been waiting for: a water-pistol fight between the jeeps that leaves guests, drivers and guides equally soaked.

Between the wet stretches there is a stop at a mountain village, where village tea, included in the price, is poured into small glasses and gözleme is rolled thin and cooked on a hot griddle for anyone who wants to buy one. It is a quiet, ordinary corner of rural Antalya, and the contrast with the resort coast is the point. Lunch is served at a riverside restaurant, with time afterwards to paddle in the stream, dry off in the sun or simply sit in the shade before the descent.

The afternoon run winds back down through the foothills to the coast and the driver drops you at the same hotel gate. From pickup to drop-off the day takes approximately seven hours. Summer departures use open-top jeeps and you will get wet; in winter the fleet switches to covered jeeps. Guiding is in English, German, Russian and Turkish. Booking is free with no prepayment: you pay in euros on the day, and you can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before departure.
